Are You Focusing On The Wrong Thing?
Everyone on X is chasing likes and reposts.
And honestly, they’re focusing on the wrong thing.
While they’re refreshing their notifications hoping someone double-tapped their post, the creators who actually grow are optimizing for something X tracks in the background, something most people don’t even know exists.
It’s called dwell time. And it might be the most important signal on the platform that nobody is talking about.
Here’s the short version: if someone stops scrolling on your post for more than 2 seconds without clicking away, X counts that as a positive engagement signal. No like required. No reply. No repost. Just a pause.
That pause is telling the algorithm: this content made someone stop. Surface it to more people.
I’ve been deep in the weeds on how X’s Phoenix Algorithm actually distributes content, and dwell time comes up as one of the most underrated levers a small account can pull.
So I put together what I like to call The Dwell Time Commandments.

The Dwell Time Commandments
The Dwell Time Commandments are 13 rules, built from real platform behavior, algorithm research, and hard-won creator experience, designed to help you leverage X’s Algorithm to your advantage so you can gain the most reach and build up your X reputation score despite likes, reposts and comments.
I created the Dwell Time Commandments because dwell time is one of the most powerful signals on X, and one of the least talked about. Think of it like television ratings. A TV show doesn't get renewed because the audience thought about watching it. It gets renewed because people actually sat down, stayed tuned, and kept coming back, regardless of any personal likes by you or shares with people in real life.
Networks live and die by watch time, how long viewers stayed on the channel, whether they stuck around after the credits, whether they binged the next episode. Pull in those high numbers and a show gets another season. Lose them and it gets cancelled, no matter how much buzz it had online.

Now Back To The Topic.
X works the same way. Dwell time is your ratings. It tells the algorithm whether people are actually stopping for your content or scrolling right past it, and that determines whether your posts get promoted to a wider audience or quietly buried.
Most creators are so focused on chasing likes and reposts that they completely overlook the metric X's Phoenix Algorithm is using to score and distribute their content behind the scenes.
Each commandment is a practical, actionable principle built around how dwell time actually works: what generates it, what kills it, how to use it to extend your reach, and how to stop leaving impressions on the table. Whether you're brand new to X or you've been posting for years and can't crack your growth ceiling, these rules apply. Follow them and you'll be optimizing for something most creators on this platform don't even know exists.

Commandments 1-7
COMMANDMENT 1: Stop optimizing for likes. Start optimizing for pauses.
A post that gets 3 likes but makes 800 people stop and read is performing better than you think. X sees what your followers don’t show you.
COMMANDMENT 2: Write posts that create a processing delay in the brain.
Bold claims, surprising facts, uncomfortable truths, a stat that doesn’t feel right at first glance, anything that makes someone stop and think is accumulating dwell time silently.
COMMANDMENT 3: Post videos. Seriously, just post videos.
A video holds eyes for 15, 30, 60 seconds. All of that is dwell time stacking to your post score. Text posts can generate dwell time, but video does it on autopilot, especially because of the video feed auto populate
COMMANDMENT 4: Puzzle posts and problem-solving content are dwell time traps, in the best way.
When someone stops to think through a problem you’ve posed, they’re sitting on your post. X is watching that. Use this strategy to your advantage.
COMMANDMENT 5: Your opening line is your dwell time bet. Make it cost something to scroll past.
If your first line doesn’t create an open loop, the reader closes it immediately, by scrolling away. You need a hook that makes scrolling feel like leaving money on the table.
COMMANDMENT 6: Long-form threads generate more dwell time. But only if every line earns the next one.
A thread that makes someone read 12 tweets is a dwell time goldmine. A thread they abandon at tweet 2 is worse than posting nothing. Use them wisely.
COMMANDMENT 7: Don’t front-load your punchline.
If the best thing about your post is in the first sentence, there’s no reason to stop. Tease the payoff. Make them stay for it.

We’re Just Getting Started
That's the first seven. And if you're already rethinking how you structure your posts, good. That means this is working.
Here's the thing most creators never figure out: X isn't a social platform. It's a scoring system. Every post you publish gets ranked, evaluated, and distributed based on signals most people don't even know exist. Dwell time is one of the biggest ones, and you just learned more about it than 90% of the accounts on this platform.
But we're not done.
In Part 2, I'm giving you the final six commandments, including the ones that separate creators who plateau at 5K followers from the ones who break through. We'll get into controversy versus toxicity, why your silent posts might be your best-performing ones, and the single biggest mistake creators make when they think a post has died.
Come back for Part 2. It's worth it!
